Colours and objects dice games
Instructions for teachers
Start with the just colours version. Students roll the dice once and do one or more of:
- Run and touch a flashcard which is that that colour
- Touch something that colour in the classroom (e.g. the whiteboard or the curtains)
- Touch something that colour in their textbook, in a magazine or on a worksheet
Then do the same with the other worksheets with two rolls of the dice, this time:
- Touching that thing if it matches the two rolls of the dice, i.e. if that thing is that colour
- Taking a back to front colouring pencil or felt-tip pen with the cap still on and pretending to colour that thing that colour
- Racing to draw that thing in that colour
Students can then make their own tables to play the same game(s) with.
If you are doing this to practice number word recognition/ reading and it gets too easy, you can:
- Fold the card or cut off the figures so that only the number words can be seen
- Use the versions with mixed up numbers
- Cut up the cards into rows and mix them up between each throw of the dice (so students can’t just memorise where each number is without reading it each time)
- Cut off the number words and match them to different rows between each roll of the dice
- Play the game with a dice that has number words written on each side instead of figures
If the activity is too difficult for your class, you can let students refer to the colour words guide and/ or number words guide on the last page below. You can also make similar word guides with pictures for the classroom vocabulary, clothes vocabulary, etc. It might also help them to have an alphabet chart/ phonics chart on the table or wall to refer to.
