Lesson Plan Content:
Make sentences from syllables scrabble game
Instructions for teachers
Cut up one pack of cards per group of three or four students. Ask them to spread them out face-up across the table and then to take turns making sentences with words with the number of syllables shown, e.g. “I had a wonderful time yesterday” with “o” + “o” + “o” + “ooo” + “o” + “ooo”. If everyone accepts that the sentence makes sense, is grammatically correct and has the right number of syllables for each word, the student can keep those cards, scoring one point for each card that they successfully used. They then can’t use the same words in other sentences later in the game. Students take turns doing the same until you stop them or all the cards are gone. The person with the most cards (and therefore points) at the end of the game wins.
If the game gets too slow, you can allow whoever has an idea to go next instead of waiting for the next person each time. It’s also possible to play a game that is more like Scrabble, by having sentences join up with each other like a crossword and/ or by students dealing out some cards and only using those in their next sentence.
