Instructions for teachers and parents
There are three versions of this activity. The first is on one page to save paper and photocopying. The second one is on cards to make it easy for students to match the words, and to make it easier to add more words and/ or take some away if you want to. However, this activity is usually most fun as a book where students turn the flaps to make good and bad matches, similar to the classic book Do You Like Ketchup on Your Cornflakes? or the picture books where different heads, bodies and legs can be mixed and matched.
To make a book, the pages need to be stapled together on the right-hand side (not the left as you might imagine) and then cut along the dotted lines. You could also draw suitable pictures on the back of the next page on the right-hand side (e.g. a face with a thought bubble opposite “Do you want…?”), but as you read it is best to do so without looking at the pictures if possible in order to make them pay more attention when reading or listening.
The activity is amusing enough just done freestyle, but you could ask them to try to make matches which people (truthfully) answer “Yes” to and/ or to make the most ridiculous matches (there is at least one good match and at least one silly match for each option).
After reading, they could draw suitable pictures on their own copy of the book. To save time, it’s best if the colours are just a small bubble on each page (rather than colouring in the whole flap). The colour “white” can be done with just a bubble with nothing in it, or they can colour round it in black to emphasize the lack of colour. Alternatively, to save time and photocopying, each person could draw a picture of their favourite silly combination instead of making pictures for every page.
They could also make their own versions of this mix and match activity, perhaps keeping the same question starters but changing the objects.
