The noun "fruit" is singular. I can understand how one might think, "They are apples.", but I don't see the logic in choosing a plural verb here. Still, "My favorite fruit is apples." could sound strange with the singular verb right next to the plural "apples". I would still go with "is" though. A singular subject means a singular verb.

What about, "Apples are my favorite fruit." ?

kimyoungseok

apples is the plural so I should choose rhe fruit are apples

Amutha

Obviously, the singular subject "fruit" should take a singular verb "is".

Wallander

Prove that "my favorite fruit" is the subject here. Couldn't we consider "apples" as the real subject? I think that the most "natural" order for this sentence would be "Apples are my favourite fruit". What do you think?

kimmikoto

I'm putting my money on, 'is.'

Claudia

I think it is "are" because apples is plural.

kayla

thanks

Maya

"is" the right word because "APPLE IS MY FAVORITE FRUIT.."

La Trale

I think here we have to take "apples" as 1 unit (for they are all apples = that's one unit, therefore = is)
e.g. My favorite fruits (oranges, bananas, apples etc) are Bananas and Oranges.
compare:
My favorite fruit is bananas.
