Should the names of swimming pools be in uppercase? For example:

Yan Kit summing pool
River Valley swimming pool

Thanks.

Re: Yan Kit summing pool

And if "swimming pool" is part of the official name of the pool, then these two words should be capitalized too; for example, Yan Kit Swimming Pool.

Proper nouns are capitalized (with rare exceptions, like e. e. cummings).

If cummings or bell hooks comes at the start of a sentence, should they be capitalised? I've never been sure on this.

Re: Yan Kit summing pool

I tend to capitalise usernames regardless of user preference.

For me? No.

But then you could easily argue not only whether anyone has the right to spell their name in any way they want, but also whether this choice should allow exceptions to the conventions of our writing system. And then you'd have to ask the same question for company names, such as amazon.

I'd be very interested to know what other members think about this.

Re: Yan Kit summing pool

Your approach is as valid as mine. Perhaps more so, given that every other word in a sentence that has an initial lower-case letter takes an initial capital when it is the first word.

The point is really that names do not follow the usual rules. Names are more than just words.

I will follow them in sentences, but still feel the need to start a sentence with a capital letter, so would write E.e. cummings or Bell hooks, which do, admittedly, look weird, but seem to fall between two stools.

Re: Yan Kit summing pool

Since Cummings himself usually followed normal conventions when he wrote his name, I wouldn't worry about that bit.
