published in vs pulished on

Can you tell me when or where I should use
"publish in " and when or where I should use "published on "
I know that when it comes to a "date", it is published on
but is there a difference between a book, a journal (published in)
and a newspaper or magazine (published on ? in ? )

Published in + year of publication
Published on + date of publication
Published in + book\jouran\magazing, etc, where an article appeared
