Hi, everyone, I have written a personal statement for applying the MSc of Economics at University of Edinburgh. Any tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
These are the guidelines provided as below:
This is my personal statement as below:
After the COVID-19 epidemic, the global economy gradually recovered, but China experienced a longer period. Many companies faced with a decline in business performance or even collapse due to the impact on consumption, production, supply and logistic. Even the top enterprises in China took tightening development measures such as scaling down the investment of strategic businesses, reducing operation costs by reducing employment. Especially this year, the labor-market volatility resulted in an increase in unemployment rate. It happened to the people around me, which makes me deeply feel that the economy is not just the news on media and the theories in books, but so close to everyone’s life.
As my consultancy work for local governments, I have a strong desire to explore the essence of the economy, and further analyse the issues of business operation, financial risk and employment. There is an urgent need for me to learn more specialized theoretical knowledge of economics and research methods, to adapt to changes in the current complex situation of economy. This is why I am applying for the MSc Economics programme at the University of Edinburgh.
I graduated from xxxxx with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Engineering, which is the top-ranked and most difficult major in our university. Although not major in economics,I still took relevant courses such as Advanced Mathematics, Mathematical Equations, Probability, Statistics and Stochastic Process, Data Struct. I studied calculus and its practical application with the classical equations. I also learned the knowledge of random distributions and sequences, statistical inference and regression analysis, as well as the methods of data analysis, algorithms and realisation. Through these studies, I have improved my mathematical skills and logic analysis ability.
In 2017, I joined x x x x, a wholly-owned subsidiary of xxxxxx (group). From 2018, I got an opportunity through a project with my past experience in data analysis, started to work as Director of Smart Economy Products. I have worked with my team and cooperated with more than 20 local governments in China over last 5 years, providing systems, solutions and consultancy services on regional economy analysis.
I participated in the Economic Analysis Project of the Shenzhen Government, combed the monitoring indicators and leading indicators of the main industries in Shenzhen. By combing the monitoring and the leading indicators of the main industries in cities, collecting data and applying it in the correlation analysis of time series, we set up regression models to predict economic performance months in advance, and provide a web tool to help the governments make economic policies.
After COVID-19 lockdown in February 2020, the Chinese government promoted economic recovery and work resumption. I participated a project launched by the State Council General Office as one of the main members, to assess the resumption rate of production, employment and business, through integrating data on industrial electricity consumption, tax, logistics, mobile communication over China’s 31 provinces. Our team completed a final analysis report in a very short period of time, and was honored by the State Council.
My job inspires my interest in economics. I attended economic-based training courses, such as Macro and Micro Economics, Fiscal and Monetary, Financial and Accounting, Statistics and Analysis, Enterprise Strategy and Management, then I have obtained a Certificate of Economics Professional Qualification by taking the national examination.
I aspire to further improvement of my professionalism through a specialist master's programme. I choose this programme because it has great advantages in high-quality teaching, great resources for studying, extensive research experience. Particularly as a unique collaborative venture it combines the teaching expertise of eight Scottish universities, and it provides a wide range of elective courses matching my interest so much, such as Labor Market Economics, Asset Pricing, Corporate Finance. In addition, the University of Edinburgh is an old and beautiful university with a multicultural atmosphere, and I hope to exchange views with people from different backgrounds through different perspectives. Upon graduation, I wish to continue with my consultancy work for government, and become an expert in my field in the long term. Admission into this programme is a significant step towards my aspiration, I look forward to your kind consideration of my application.
