Indicators in recognizing spoken words

Hello teachers

I need your help. Due to my new campus regulation which states that the students who want to conduct an action research must concern with micro skills; then,I have a plan conducting a research about listening, for this case I choose recognizing spoken words. However, I am still confused how to measure the recognizing words itself in order to know the improvement. Could you help me what indicators of recognizing words should I concern about? Then, what kind of tests are appropriate to know the students will succeed in recognizing words.

How are you going to test their recognition- orally or by reading/writing?

I am supposed to test them by writing by dividing into two kind of tests. First is multiple choice to know students' ability to distinguish distinctive sounds and to identify explicit information. Second is through dictation test.
