Hi Everyone!
I teach kindergarten in an urban, public, title 1 school. I have a diverse group of students and languages however, Spanish is the most prominent L1 for my students. My state is part of the WIDA consortium. Therefore, my students take the WIDA kindergarten exam (August) and the WIDA Access test (February). The WIDA kindergarten test only measures speaking and listening, while the Access test measures all four domains. Consistently, my students struggle with speaking and listening. What are some suggestions for improving listening comprehension and oral grammar structure?
Our state requires all teachers to be LETRS certified (we focus on academic vocabulary and phonics), and we use McGraw-Hill Wonders as our ELD and ELA basal curriculum. I try to get my students talking about interesting topics but want to prepare them for diverse speaking and listening situations.
Thank you for your suggestions!
