Is this really a good literary work?

I've read every word Orwell ever published, essays and all. I've always thought it ironic that he is most remembered for Animal Farm and 1984, two of his weakest works.
They used to be two of my favourite books. Animal Farm was a set text at school when I was 13, and I think I read 1984 shortly afterwards, simply because I'd enjoyed Animal Farm.
I've tried reading both again as an adult and, although I still enjoyed the main point (and relevance) of Animal Farm, I found 1984 like trudging through mud. I think I gave up after about a hundred pages.

Thank you, guys! Could you please tell me what the basic principles are for a good English article?

First, you should have something to say. Second, you should say it clearly. What is important is the words you choose, not the number of words you use.
