Subject Question Discussion Activities

Ask a question from below. After answering, your partner can decide to ask a different
question or the same question back, so make sure you don’t choose questions which you
can’t answer yourself!

 How much internet use is too much?
 How much money is enough in this city?
 What annoys people about this town?
 What attracts people to cults?
 What attracts people to extremism?
 What causes fake news?
 What changes to this country would be universally popular?
 What changes would make this town better?
 What could calm people down during health scares?
 What helps most when people want to give up addictions such as smoking?
 What jobs will be more common in the future?
 What jobs will disappear in the future?
 What kinds of people are most interested in politics?
 What makes children dislike school?
 What makes people lose faith in the media?
 What makes people mistrust politicians?
 What makes some education systems more successful than others?
 What makes teenagers rebel against their parents?
 What motivates people to climb the social ladder?
 What organisations help poor people most effectively?
 What should worry us most about near future?
 What sort of people disagree with globalisation?
 What stops some people from voting?

 Who (if anyone) should accompany children to school in the morning?
 Who doesn’t have equal rights in this country?
 Who has more power, governments or companies?
 Who has most influence on young people?
 Who pays too much tax?
 Who should apologise for historical wrongdoings such as slavery and colonialism?
 Who should warn children about unplanned pregnancies, and when?
 Who will be the next leader of this country?
 Who would be a better president/ prime minister than the present one?
 Whose face should be on this country’s banknotes?
 Whose statues should be put up and/ or taken down in this town?

Ask about questions which you don’t understand, aren’t sure how to answer, etc.

How are all the questions similar?

How are they different from other discussion questions like “What do you think about…?”,
“What are the main reasons for…?” and “How important is …ing (…)?”

What are the grammatical subjects of those three questions? What are the subjects of all
the questions you asked and answered before?

Make up and ask similar discussion questions starting with who, whose, which and what.
