Countable and uncountable nouns roleplays

 

Countable and uncountable discuss and agree

You are going to do one of the things below together. Try to agree on what you need and how much or how many of each thing.

• Setting up a new office
• Buying supplies for a buffet lunch for a very mixed group of nationalities
• Buying supplies for an office Xmas party
• Going on holiday to a country with both hot and cold places (e.g. both beaches and mountains)
• Going on a one-week business trip to at least four different countries, with a range of different climates

Share your decisions for one of the situations above with the class and see if other groups agree.

Ask about any situations you don’t understand, are not sure what you need for, etc.

If your teacher tells you to, brainstorm numbers and amounts that you could have mentioned in your roleplay discussions.

 

Countable and uncountable negotiations

Perhaps after changing groups, phone a supplier to buy things you need for one of the situations above. They will offer you discounts if you order more, so you don’t necessarily need to order the same number/ amount as you discussed before.

 

Countable and uncountable exchanges

Choose one of the situations below and think of things that you (preferably really) have and don’t want and would be willing to swap (= exchange for other things). Try to agree on swaps with your partner, including how much or how many of each thing each time.

• In your workplace
• In your kitchen
• In your bathroom and toilet
• In the rest of your house
• In your bag and pockets (now)
• On your computer

 

Countable and uncountable progress check meetings

Hold a progress check meeting with your boss. They will ask you about finishing things you need to do, including how much or how many of each thing you have already done (decorating, reports, research, experiments, etc). Give a different answer each time (meaning you can’t claim to have finished everything!)
