Here the verb "read" is middle voice, which means it is grammatically active but semantically passive. So the sentence "The book reads well" means "One reads the book well".

It is grammatically correct.
For example, it's a bit like saying, "The car drives well." Obviously we don't mean that the car is a good driver, but that it is good to drive. Same.
