I use the subjunctive, like a literate person should.

nevar111

I use "If I were..." simply because my Mother taught me reasonable good English.

BIRBAL JHA

hypothetical situation

Lynque

'Were I you,' if you want to be highfalutin' about it.

david

Erm, do you change verb conjugation for hypothetical situations? I know that if i was once a bat, I would say "I was a bat." If I was a bat, if I was an artichoke, if I was him, if I was you.

tektek

if i were u = standard english
if i was u = everyday english= still acceptable
but in the the 3rd type of the cond (or known as the 2nd type)= unreal past...we use if i 'were' you..because i'm not you & i cant be you !!!!

geowa4

>I use "If I were..." simply because
>my Mother taught me reasonable
>good English.

Shouldn't that be "reasonably"
